IS Supporter Gets Maximum Sentence for Duisburg Stabbings: No Regrets, No Compassion

It's been eight months since the chilling knife attacks in Duisburg, and the courts have handed out a strict punishment for the confessed Islamist involved. On Tuesday, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court sentenced the 27-year-old perpetrator to life imprisonment for four counts of attempted murder and murder.

The harsh punishment was a direct consequence of the perpetrator's indifferent attitude towards his actions and the victims. The court declared his guilt as particularly grave, leaving the possibility of his release after serving a minimum term of 15 years highly unlikely. The 27-year-old was also placed under preventive detention.

Lack of Emotion and Dangerous Intent

The Syrian offender showed no remorse, no compassion, and even went as far as planning further crimes, according to the federal prosecutor's office. His actions reflected the Islamic State terrorist group's slogan of turning the entire world into a battlefield.

The 27-year-old's first victim was a 35-year-old man, who was stabbed to death in Duisburg on April 9 with at least 28 stab wounds. Nine days later, he attacked and severely injured four visitors in a Duisburg fitness studio.

"I wanted to kill as many people as possible, and commit more crimes until I was killed so that I would die a martyr," he confessed.

Family and Victims Shocked by Perpetrator's Lack of Remorse

The defense attorney found the defendant uncooperative and was unable to file a motion beyond the first day of the trial. He had been hoping to disrupt his client's statement that went beyond the confines of the initial indictment.

"My client did not speak to me. I could slow him down on the first day, but then he made a statement that went beyond the content of the indictment," the defense attorney expressed.

Enrichment Data

While detailed information on the specific sentencing for the 2021 Duisburg knife attacks is not available, there are similar cases in which individuals associated with terrorist activities have faced harsh sentencing. For instance, in 2017, Ahmad Alhaw was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in a stabbing rampage at a Hamburg supermarket[1]. More recently, Walaa, an individual involved in planning an attack and gathering funds and fighters for the Islamic State, was sentenced to 10-and-a-half years in prison in 2021[2].
