Dual-screen Nintendo Switch 2 rumors heat up after fan's epic Steam Deck mod

Nintendo fans are buzzing with excitement after the company added GameCube titles to its Nintendo Switch Online library. Many now wonder if Wii or DS games could be next in line. Meanwhile, a clever modder has given a glimpse of what epic dual-screen gaming might look like on a handheld device—without waiting for official support.

Recent leaks and patents suggest Nintendo itself is exploring similar ideas for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, including ways to play classic DS titles on the new hardware.

A gamer known as rediiboy has successfully modified their Steam Deck to include a second screen. The setup uses a 10.1-inch portable IPS panel with a 1280x800 resolution, attached via a custom 3D-printed bracket. The bracket mounts to the Deck's kickstand screws, while a flexible arm clamp holds the monitor in place. Weighing under 300g and drawing power directly from the Deck's 5V/2A output, the extra screen avoids interference with internal components like the fan.

The modder paired the display with a magnetic smartphone mount, creating a stable dual-screen experience. This DIY approach mirrors what some hope to see in Nintendo's next console. Leaker @Shpeshal_Nick recently claimed the company has official plans to bring DS games to the Nintendo Switch 2. Possible solutions include using Switch controllers as substitutes for Wii Remotes and Nunchuks, or even repurposing an original Switch as a second screen.

Nintendo has also filed patents exploring the idea of an additional screen attached directly to the Switch. These developments follow the company's recent addition of GameCube classics to its online service, fuelling speculation about backward compatibility for older handheld titles.

The Steam Deck mod demonstrates how dual-screen gaming could work on a modern handheld. Nintendo's own patents and leaked plans suggest similar features may arrive with the Nintendo Switch 2. If realised, these changes would allow players to revisit DS and 3DS games without needing separate hardware. The company's next console could bridge the gap between classic and current gaming experiences.
