Dua Lipa has been granted Kosovo citizenship as a pop music star
Pop sensation Dua Lipa, born in London in 1995 to Kosovar-Albanian parents, has added another nationality to her list. On Friday, Kosovar President Vjosa Osmani presented Lipa with her Kosovar citizenship during a ceremony at the Sunny Hill Festival in Pristina, the Kosovar capital.
Lipa, who holds triple citizenship—British, Albanian, and now Kosovar—was praised by President Osmani as "one of the most iconic cultural figures in the history of our country." The ceremony was a significant moment for Lipa, who said that being a citizen of Kosovo completes "the duality I've always felt within me."
Lipa's performance at the Sunny Hill Festival was a special one. She sang a song in Albanian with her father, showcasing her fluency in the language. This wasn't the first time Lipa has embraced her cultural roots in her music. Throughout her career, she has bridged Western and Balkan identities, reflecting her personal and family heritage.
The granting of Lipa's Kosovar citizenship is historically significant. It formalizes her cultural and familial ties to Kosovo and symbolizes her advocacy for the country. Lipa co-founded the Sunny Hill Festival to promote Kosovo's cultural visibility internationally, and her role as an ambassador for Kosovo on the global stage has been acknowledged by President Osmani.
Lipa's dual citizenship with Kosovo and Albania is a testament to her commitment to her heritage. She was granted Albanian citizenship in 2022, and her Kosovar citizenship marks a symbolic return to her ethnic and cultural roots. This completes her "dual identity" as she describes it.
Lipa's achievements extend beyond her nationality. She has won multiple Grammys and Brit Awards, solidifying her status as a global music star. Her music, which often reflects her cultural background, has resonated with audiences worldwide.
As Lipa continues to make history, her dual citizenship serves as a reminder of the role diaspora figures can play in promoting national identity on the world stage.
