Du Toit Recognized as Globe's Top Rugby Player in Annual Awards

Bustin' Capes and Scoopin' Trophies:

Pieter-Steph du Toit, the Springbok superstar, snatched the limelight at the World Rugby Awards in Monaco, nabbing the Men's 15s Player of the Year trophy. Du Toit edged out fellow Springboks Eben Etzebeth, Cheslin Kolbe, and Ireland captain Caelan Doris for the coveted prize. This double triumph made the 32-year-old the first South African to claim rugby's highest individual honor twice, following his initial win in 2019. Schalk Burger (2004) and Bryan Habana (2009) are the only other Springboks to have bagged this accolade[1][2].

Du Toit displayed relentless energy and tenacity throughout the season, powering the back-to-back world champions to an impressive 2024 campaign. The Bokke clinched the Rugby Championship and won 11 of their 13 Tests, with their only defeats coming by a single point against Ireland and Argentina[4].

Seven Springboks appeared in the 2024 Dream Team, with Du Toit, Etzebeth, and Kolbe joined by Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, Damian de Allende, and Jesse Kriel. However, young flyhalf Sacha-Feinberg Mngomezulu missed out on the Men's 15s Breakthrough Player of the Year award, which went to Wallace Sititi of the All Blacks.

Despite the Springboks' remarkable success, Rassie Erasmus was overlooked for the Coach of the Year award, which was presented to Jérôme Daret for his contribution to the French men's sevens team. In response, Erasmus lauded his players, praising their dedication and teamwork[5].

The Springboks also celebrated victories in the Qatar Airways Cup, Mandela Challenge Plate, Freedom Cup, and Prince William Cup, ending the season atop the world rankings.

Fun Fact:Pieter-Steph du Toit is a versatile force on the rugby field, showcasing exceptional skills as both a flank and a lock[6].
