A boozed-up driver veered off the B109 federal highway in Vorpommern-Greifswald, causing an accident near Ducherow last Sunday evening. The 55-year-old confessed to the police that she had consumed too much alcohol and a breathalyzer test confirmed a 2.58% Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). Thankfully, she escaped unscathed, but her driving privileges are temporarily suspended. The authorities have also initiated criminal proceedings against her for driving under the influence (DUI).

Germany has stringent DUI laws, and the B109 federal highway in Vorpommern-Greifswald is no exception. Regardless of location, drunk driving is punishable with penalties such as fines, driving bans, and license revocation. For instance, a first DUI offense incurs a €500 fine, two penalty points, and a one-month driving ban. If the BAC exceeds 0.11%, the license can be revoked for at least a year, and the offender may be required to undergo a Medical Psychological Assessment (MPU) to regain their license.

In severe cases, repeat offenders face progressively harsher penalties, including higher fines and extended driving bans. In addition to the legal repercussions, DUI offenders may also be required to perform unpaid community service or face criminal charges, potentially leading to imprisonment.

In this situation, the woman was fortunate to escape without consequences beyond the immediate punishments. However, the incident serves as a reminder that drunk driving has serious consequences and should be avoided at all costs.
