Full closure on the A1: Drunk driver causes accident - Drunk driver causes multi-vehicle crash, shutting down A1 motorway for hours

A drunk driver triggered a serious crash on the A1 motorway early yesterday. The collision involved three vehicles and forced authorities to shut down both carriageways for hours. Three women suffered minor injuries in the incident.

The accident began when a 45-year-old man, driving a small van under the influence of alcohol, rear-ended a caravan. The impact sent the caravan spinning into another car. Emergency crews arrived quickly but faced delays due to a damaged gas cylinder inside the wrecked caravan.

The crash caused major disruption, with the A1 fully closed in both directions. Traffic heading toward Bremen was blocked for over four hours. The Hamburg-bound side reopened sooner, after around two hours. Cleanup operations stretched on as crews secured the scene and removed debris.

The driver now faces legal consequences for causing the collision while intoxicated. The three injured women received medical treatment for minor wounds. Traffic eventually resumed, though delays lingered as congestion cleared.
