Drones pose a risk, causing the halting of cars on the Adler highway.
In an unexpected turn of events, the temporary suspension of traffic at the Adler automobile checkpoint on the border with Abkhazia, which occurred on August 8, 2025, has been lifted. This decision was made following the cancellation of the threat of drone attacks that had initially prompted the security response.
The suspension was a precautionary measure taken in response to a reported threat of Ukrainian drone attacks on Sochi, a renowned Black Sea resort city. This threat was first announced by Dmitry Plyushkin, head of the administration of the Sirius federal territory. The heightened alertness led to the activation of air defense systems in Sochi and the surrounding area, as well as the suspension of crossings at adjacent checkpoints, including Psou, to ensure regional security.
The initial concern was further heightened by actual incidents involving drone debris falling in the region, causing disruptions to rail transport. As a result, residents were asked not to record or publish on social media any footage of air defense systems, drones, debris, or the actions of special services and protected objects. Citizens were also advised to remain calm and strictly follow instructions.
Evacuations of vacationers from public beaches and outdoor pools were carried out as a precautionary measure. However, it is worth noting that the situation has since improved, and the UAV threat has been removed, allowing for traffic through the Adler checkpoint to resume normal operations. Similarly, traffic restrictions at the Psou checkpoint were lifted after the UAV threat was removed.
The authorities have emphasised that the suspension was a necessary security measure against the drone attack threats, which was lifted once the immediate danger subsided and they deemed transit safe again. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparedness in the face of potential threats, especially in high-profile cities like Sochi.
