Drone of Ukrainian origin crashed in the Black Sea on August 19th.
In the recent escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian drones have targeted critical infrastructure across Russian territories, causing disruptions and impacting civilian operations.
August 19, 2025: The Russian Defense Ministry reported that air defense forces successfully neutralized a series of Ukrainian drones over various regions. On this day, over the Rostov region, five drones were neutralized, while thirteen were neutralized over the Volgograd region. An additional drone was neutralized over the Black Sea and another over the Belgorod region.
The incident was also reported by the "Kuban 24" internet portal. From 11:00 to 19:00, air defense forces destroyed two more Ukrainian drones. On the night of August 19, a total of 23 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russian regions.
Remarkably, no casualties or injuries were reported at Hospital No. 16 in the Volgograd region or the unspecified oil refinery in the region due to the drone attack. However, debris from the enemy drones did fall on the roof of one of the buildings at Hospital No. 16.
August 24, 2025: The escalation continued when Ukrainian drones attacked a gas terminal in Leningrad Oblast and an oil refinery in Samara Oblast overnight. These attacks forced a commercial Russian passenger plane en route to St. Petersburg to divert and make an emergency landing in Tallinn, Estonia, due to the temporary closure of Pulkovo Airport caused by the drone strikes. Passengers were not allowed to disembark during the stopover.
These disruptions have led to over 200 suspensions of airport operations within Russia since early 2025, marking a record number since the war escalated.
August 20-21, 2025: Ukrainian forces conducted long-range drone strikes against the Novoshakhtinsky Oil Refinery in Novoshakhtinsk, Rostov Oblast, a critical supplier of oil products for Russian forces in Ukraine. On the same nights, an unspecified military fuel and lubricant base in Voronezh Oblast was also struck by drones. These strikes target Russian military logistics and fuel supplies deep inside Russia's borders.
The impact on civilian areas is significant, primarily due to disruptions in civilian aviation and the targeting of dual-use infrastructure like oil refineries and gas terminals that could affect energy supplies and civilian life.
Overall, these attacks reflect an escalated drone campaign by Ukraine inside Russian territory aimed at undermining Russian military logistics and causing wider disruption to both civilian and military infrastructure.
