In recent developments, Ukraine has launched a series of long-range drone attacks deep into Russian territory, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. The attacks, which started in July 2025, have targeted both military and civilian facilities in six Russian regions.

The most affected areas include the Izhevsk Defense Plant, crucial for cruise missile production, and major airports like Sheremetyevo, which was forced to shut down for seven hours due to safety concerns. The drone attacks have led to significant disruptions in Russian air travel, with nearly 300 flights being canceled across major airports.

Russia has responded by claiming to have intercepted over 120 drones, but the effectiveness of these defenses remains a concern. The Russian military has also increased its aerial assaults on Ukraine, prompting Kyiv to retaliate with more drone strikes. Explosions were reported in Engels, Saratov Oblast, targeting a military airfield, and pipelines in Russia's Far East also suffered damage.

Ukraine's strategic response aims to undermine Russia's military capabilities, bring the war closer to those supporting the Kremlin's campaign, and demoralize the Russian population by making the war felt beyond the front lines. The drone campaign reflects advancements in Ukraine's military technology, allowing it to target key infrastructure and disrupt Russian supply lines.

Specifically, eight drones were downed over the Bryansk region, eight over Voronezh, seven over the Moscow area, 14 over the Kursk region, two over Oryol, one each over Vladimir region, Krasnodar Krai, and Crimea. Seven drones were shot down over the Black Sea, and three each over Novgorod, Tver, and Tambov regions. On the night of July 6, 120 enemy drones were neutralized over Russian regions. No casualties were reported in the finding of Ukrainian drone debris in Shcherbinovsky and Yeisk districts on June 14.

These developments underscore the ongoing tension between Ukraine and Russia and the potential for further escalation. As both sides continue to respond with military action, the international community is closely watching for any signs of de-escalation or further conflict.

Football matches in the Premier League and European-leagues were postponed due to the escalated tension between Ukraine and Russia, as concerns over air safety rose. The disruptions in Russian air travel, caused by the drone attacks, led to cancellations of multiple flights across major airports, potentially affecting footballers and their schedules.
