Drone crash in Poland traces back to Russia, according to reports
In a shocking incident that took place in November 2022, a Ukrainian air defense missile strayed off course and hit the eastern Polish village of Przewodow, claiming the lives of two men. The incident, which occurred near the village of Osiny, about 100 kilometres south of Warsaw, has since been confirmed to involve a Russian drone.
The impact site, approximately 120 kilometers from Poland's border with Ukraine and about 100 kilometres from the border with Belarus, left a crater about six meters in diameter and 50 centimeters deep, as reported by the prosecutor. The scene of the crash was marked by burned plastic and metal debris, with images from social media showing a charred motor with a propeller.
Initially, NATO declined to comment on the incident. However, Poland's Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Russia is provoking NATO countries. He added that Poland, feeling threatened by Russia, is heavily arming itself.
The drone's motor was a common model produced in China, as was the onboard electronics. It is unclear whether the explosion occurred in the air or on the ground, but the explosive payload on the drone was not large and was likely intended for self-destruction.
The Polish government has identified the crashed object in a cornfield as a Russian drone. Consequently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it would submit a protest note to Moscow. The drone crash caused broken windows in several nearby houses, but thankfully, no one was injured.
Poland, a political and military supporter of Ukraine, has been on high alert due to perceived threats from Russia. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the geopolitical tensions in the region. As investigations continue, the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution.
