Drone assault in Sochi prompts residents to seek shelter

In the wake of a drone strike that caused a major fire at an oil depot in Sochi, Russia, authorities have taken drastic measures to ensure air safety and public protection.

Rosaviatsia, Russia’s civil aviation agency, has suspended flights at Sochi Airport, forcing some departing flights to make additional landings at alternate airfields for refueling. Fuel restrictions have also been imposed at the airport due to the attack.

The incident on August 3, 2025, prompted a swift response from more than 120 firefighters who were deployed to contain the fire. Similar warnings and security measures have been implemented in other Russian regions targeted by drone attacks, such as the Voronezh region where casualties were reported from another Ukrainian drone strike.

Mayor Andrei Proshunin of Sochi has declared a threat of drone attack and urges citizens to take necessary precautions. If people are on the street, Proshunin recommends taking shelter in the basement of the nearest building. However, he advises against hiding behind the walls of apartment buildings during the threat.

At home, people should stay away from windows, take shelter in a room without sea-facing windows, or in a windowless room such as a hallway, bathroom, toilet, or pantry. Proshunin also emphasizes that in case of an attack, people should not publish photos and videos of air defense work, drones, their debris, or the actions of emergency services.

Authorities in Novorossiysk, a southern Russian city, have also urged citizens to report suspicious objects. Periodically, danger levels have been introduced in several regions of Russia, including the Voronezh and Orenburg regions, as well as North Ossetia, in 2024 and 2025.
