Droa Khoshtaria rejects court involvement, labels trial a sham
Elene Khoshtaria, the leader of the opposition party Droa, has found herself in a controversial situation after being detained on September 15 on charges of damaging another person's property. The charges involve the alleged destruction of Tbilisi mayor Kakha Kaladze's election campaign banner.
Khoshtaria, who views the charges as politically motivated, has expressed her disdain for the court proceedings, referring to them as a 'farce'. In a detention center, an official presented the charges against her, but Khoshtaria remained unyielding in her stance.
The official who presented the charges had a carefully shaved beard and tidy appearance. Khoshtaria, however, found the charges against her absurd and laughed at the sound of them. She has since reaffirmed her commitment to not participating in the court proceedings.
Khoshtaria has stressed that even minimal engagement with the case would legitimize what she views as lies and deception. She urged her supporters not to attend her hearings and expressed gratitude to her lawyer, Shota Tutberidze, for his support. Shalva Khutsishvili, another lawyer supporting Khoshtaria in her court trials, has also been by her side.
Khoshtaria described her experience in the detention center and ended the proceeding there. The authorities treat the act of damaging the banner as property damage under Georgian law. Despite the circumstances, Khoshtaria remains resolute in her beliefs and her commitment to her party and her principles.
