Sofa on the street - chase ends with multiple charges - Driver flees after sofa debris sparks highway chaos and police chase
A 35-year-old driver near Helmbrechts sparked a police investigation after losing part of a sofa from his trailer, creating a dangerous road hazard. Instead of stopping, he fled at high speed, leading to a brief but dramatic chase before officers intervened and confiscated his license plates.
The incident began when the sofa piece and wooden planks—some with exposed screws—fell onto the road, forcing other motorists to swerve and alert authorities. Witnesses reported the debris scattered across the street, posing an immediate risk to traffic.
Police quickly located the driver, who had reloaded the fallen furniture before speeding off. A short but intense pursuit followed, ending when officers stopped the vehicle. Upon inspection, they found the car and trailer were unregistered. The license plates attached did not belong to the vehicle but to another car, which was also out of service and not linked to the driver.
Investigators later confirmed the plates were fraudulently used. The driver now faces multiple charges, including dangerous interference with road traffic, document forgery, misuse of license plates, and violations related to traffic and insurance laws. Authorities are also examining the involvement of the vehicles’ former owner in the case.
The driver was barred from continuing his journey, and his license plates were seized. The investigation continues, with a focus on both the driver’s actions and the former owner’s potential role in the vehicle’s unregistered status. Charges are expected to proceed based on the findings.
