Man Arrested for Alleged Attempted Murder and DUI After Plowing into Liverpool Victory Parade Crowd

A 53-year-old man was arrested on Monday night on suspicion of attempted murder and driving under the influence of drugs after driving a vehicle into a crowd during Liverpool's Premier League victory parade, injuring around 60 people. On Tuesday, local police confirmed that the suspect is in custody.

The collision occurred on Water Street, moments after the parade ended, leaving at least 50 people injured, including children. Eleven of the injured individuals currently remain hospitalized, albeit in stable condition. Police emphasized that the incident was an isolated one and is not being treated as terrorism. The suspect reportedly gained access to the parade route by following an ambulance responding to a medical emergency.

Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage to track the vehicle's movements. To the public's relief, authorities confirmed that there is no ongoing investigation concerning additional suspects or a broader threat.

Liverpool Football Club was hosting a parade to celebrate its Premier League triumph, with supporters lining the route in large numbers despite the heavy rain. Estimates suggest that hundreds of thousands, possibly a million, fans gathered to celebrate the club's victory.

In the wake of the incident, King Charles III expressed his deep condolences on social media, stating he was "saddened" and "deeply shocked" by the event. This marked the first time in 35 years that fans could celebrate a national title in person, as there was no parade during the club's last victory in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 1989, Liverpool fans faced tragedy at Sheffield's Hillsborough Stadium, where 97 fans died in a crush and over 760 more were injured in the worst disaster in British sporting history.
