Kenyan Star Janeth Chepngetich Secures Spot at 2025 World Athletics Championships

Janeth Chepngetich, a Kenyan athletics veteran, has secured a place at the upcoming World Championships Tokyo 2025, following her impressive win at the Kenyan national trials for the 10,000m race.

During the trials, Chepngetich clocked an impressive time of 30:27.02, outpacing strong competitors such as Agnes Ng'etich (30:27.38) and Beatrice Chebet (30:27.52). This performance not only secured her victory but also a spot at the global event.

The World Championships will take place from September 13-21 in Tokyo, Japan. While Chepngetich has been confirmed for the event, she has yet to compete in the 10,000m race specifically for the World Championships, as the championships are still upcoming. Her 30:27.02 at trials remains her key qualifying time and current benchmark.

Chepngetich aims to make Tokyo 2025 her first World Championships appearance, marking a significant milestone in her career. She is yet to disclose any specific goals or expected finishing results for the event beyond securing her qualification.

In the lead-up to the World Championships, Chepngetich has been focusing on building speed and endurance through speed work. She will be competing alongside Beatrice Chebet, Margaret Chelimo, Agnes Ngetich, and Margaret Akidor.

The 30-year-old athlete has a rich history in athletics, having competed for a decade. Her most recent achievement was winning the 10,000m race at the 2023 African Games, staged in Accra, Ghana. In January 2024, she finished fourth at the Valencia 10k in a time of 29:55.

In other notable achievements, Chepngetich ran her personal best of 14:40.25 in the 5000m, despite not finishing in the top ten at the Eugene Diamond League. She was the runner-up at the Prague half marathon in April 2023. When she started striking a balance between road and track racing, she won the 2022 Udine Half Marathon in a course record time of 1:08.24.

Chepngetich also competed over 1500m at the 2015 World Youth Championships in Athletics in Cali, Colombia. A decade ago, she won a bronze medal in the 1500m at the Africa Youth championships. In February this year, she came in second at the Sirikwa Classic World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meeting.

As Chepngetich prepares for the World Championships, she has expressed her podium ambitions for the event. The real work, she says, begins now that she has secured a ticket to compete.

Chepngetich's focus now shifts towards preparing for the World Championships Tokyo 2025, aiming to make a significant impact in various sports, particularly football, to maintain her overall health and improve her performance. During her training, she plans to incorporate exercises that strengthen her endurance and speed.

Post the World Championships, Chepngetich aspires to continue setting new benchmarks in sports by participating in numerous epaper competitions and winning more accolades for Kenya in upcoming athletics events.
