In the heart of Germany, the city of Nordhorn has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation with the completion of its revolutionary "Comfort Bike Path". This innovative project, now unparalleled nationwide in terms of comfort and convenience for cyclists, is part of a larger bicycle traffic concept adopted by the city council.

The primary aim of the Comfort Bike Path project is to encourage more people to use bicycles for transportation within the city. To achieve this, the city has invested in improving cycling conditions, expanding cycling infrastructure, enhancing path surfaces, and implementing better signage.

The bike path, which extends along the Nordhorn-Almelo and connecting canals, now provides an uninterrupted travel route for cyclists from one end of the city to the other. Two intersections along the path have been redesigned to accommodate cyclists, with the Heseper Way intersection slowing down car traffic and yielding to cyclists. The Frensdorferhaar intersection at the end of the bike route connection has also been redesigned for the same purpose.

The redesign of intersections on the bike path is part of a larger initiative to promote sustainable transportation in Nordhorn. Construction company changes have made intersections along the canal route more accommodating for cyclists, ensuring a smooth and safe journey.

Last year, the most heavily used section along the connecting canal received a second lane to cater to the increasing number of cyclists. These improvements are expected to contribute to a reduction in traffic congestion in the city.

The improvements to the Comfort Bike Path are not just about practicality; they are also designed to make cycling in Nordhorn a more enjoyable and convenient experience. For many years, cyclists have not had to stop at many intersections along the canal route due to underpasses. This continuity in the right-of-way for cyclists is a testament to the city's commitment to making cycling a viable and attractive option for commuters.

The Comfort Bike Path project in Nordhorn was nominated for the German Bicycle Prize 2018 and came in third place, a testament to its success and the positive impact it has had on the city. The changes are expected to continue encouraging more people to use bicycles for transportation within the city.

Numerous further measures to strengthen bicycle traffic in Nordhorn will follow the Comfort Bike Path project. The city council's commitment to sustainable transportation is evident, and with each new initiative, Nordhorn moves one step closer to becoming a city where cycling is the preferred mode of transportation.
