Dricus Du Plessis Triumphs at World MMA Awards Ceremony
The South African martial arts sensation, Dricus du Plessis, was crowned the International Fighter of the Year at the prestigious Fighters Only World Mixed Martial Arts Awards. This honor came after an incredible run, beating out some tough competition, including Ilia Topuria, Zhang Weili, Jack Della Maddalena, and Chihiro Suzuki.
Du Plessis' triumphant period, from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, saw him defeat Robert Whittaker by second-round TKO at UFC 290 in Las Vegas, making him South Africa's first UFC champion following his split decision win over Sean Strickland at UFC 297 in Toronto.
Nicknamed "Stillknocks," Du Plessis was also nominated for the Charles Lewis Fighter of the Year award, which ultimately went to UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, and the Upset of the Year award, won by Sean Strickland for his title triumph over Israel Adesanya at UFC 293.
Rumors swirl that he might be facing Strickland in a rematch at UFC 312 in Sydney in February. However, no official announcement has been made. Interested in taking on a greater challenge, Du Plessis has professed his eagerness to face Khamzat Chimaev instead after the latter's spectacular submission win over Whittaker in October.
Meanwhile, UFC strawweight queen Zhang Weili took home the Female Fighter of the Year award, while UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall bagged both the Breakthrough Fighter of the Year and Comeback of the Year awards.
The epic battle between Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje for the BMF belt at UFC 300 was named Fight of the Year, with Holloway also claiming the Knockout of the Year honors for his unforgettable stoppage of "The Highlight."
Diego Lopes' triangle armbar against Gavin Tucker at UFC Nashville secured the Submission of the Year award, while UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman won both the Lifetime Achievement award and the Fighting Spirit award for his heroic actions in rescuing his family and loved ones from a burning building.
