Dresden State Orchestra performs with Mahler Youth Orchestra - Dresden’s legendary orchestra joins forces with Europe’s top young musicians
The Staatskapelle Dresden is teaming up with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra for a special concert in Dresden. This collaboration highlights their long-standing partnership, which has supported young musicians since 2010. The performance will showcase Romantic classics, including works by Weber, Schumann, and Dvořák.
The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra brings together around 100 talented musicians from across Europe. Each year, an international jury selects players through auditions held in over 25 cities. Many of the orchestra’s former members now perform with the Staatskapelle Dresden, reflecting the programme’s success in nurturing talent.
The upcoming concert features Weber’s Der Freischütz overture, Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, 'From the New World'. Yunchan Lim, a 21-year-old South Korean pianist, will make his German orchestral debut with Schumann’s concerto. Beyond performances, the Staatskapelle supports young artists through its Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy. This two-year training programme pairs aspiring musicians with experienced players. After the Dresden concert, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra will join the Staatskapelle on a tour of South Korea from January 27 to February 1.
The partnership between the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra continues to provide opportunities for emerging musicians. Following the Dresden performance, the tour will further strengthen cultural ties between Europe and South Korea. Yunchan Lim’s debut and the orchestra’s collaboration mark key moments in this ongoing initiative.
