Dynamo Dresden enters the season with a tough campaign ahead, as relegation is considered a strong possibility due to the league's competitiveness. The team was missing key players like Christoph Daferner and Jakob Zickler, who were out due to injuries. The confirmed Dynamo Dresden lineup for the cup tie included Schreiber, Faber, Boeder, Sapina, Risch, Hauptmann (captain), Amoako, Fröling, Lemmer, Bünning, and Kother.

Statistically, Dynamo Dresden created more shots overall (16 vs. 12) and shots on target (7 vs. 6), but Mainz secured the victory with a single goal by Nadiem Amiri.

In a friendly match against Hertha BSC's second team, Dynamo Dresden emerged victorious with a commanding 3-0 win. The match provided an opportunity for Thomas Stamm, head coach of Dynamo Dresden, to give more playing time to lesser-used players. Stamm was suspended for the friendly match due to a red card in a previous game.

Luca Herrmann, who recently returned from Paderborn, scored two goals for Dynamo Dresden, one in the 45th minute and another in the 55th minute. Herrmann's second goal was a result of a mistake by Hertha's goalkeeper Maximilian Mohwinkel.

Thomas Stamm, in his time with SC Freiburg's second team, knew new signing Vincent Vermeij. However, Vermeij, recently acquired from Fortuna Düsseldorf, did not participate in the friendly match.

Dynamo Dresden's next league play will resume after August 18 due to a city festival in Dresden. The team will face a tough test when they take on Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05 in the DFB-Pokal once again. Thomas Stamm will be hoping for a better result, as the team looks to turn their season around.
