Buga 2033: Investments of 120 Million Euros Planned - Dresden’s 2033 Federal Garden Show slashes costs and unveils bold green vision

Dresden is set to host the 2033 Federal Garden Show (Buga), marking the first time the event will bring news and attention to Saxony. The city plans to invest €120 million in the project, with half of the funding coming from federal grants. Organisers have now unveiled an updated concept, cutting initial cost estimates nearly in half.

The revised plan focuses on two central themes: Dresden’s New Horizon and Dresden’s New Togetherness. These will run along two ‘lifelines’ stretching across 100 hectares. Key areas for development include Südpark, the racecourse, and the gravel lakes in Leuben. Südpark and the racecourse will each receive €39 million, while the Leuben gravel lakes will get €19 million.

The total budget of €120 million will be split evenly between city funds and government contributions. This represents a significant reduction from the original €232 million projection. Before work can begin, the city council must approve the latest concept, with a vote scheduled for early 2026.

Once approved, a public competition for landscape and agricultural architects will launch in mid-2026 to design the show’s core zones. Construction planning will follow, with the first groundbreaking expected in 2029. Some projects, such as a new swimming area at the Leuben gravel lake, will be prioritised for faster completion.

The event aims to enhance Dresden’s green spaces, improve livability, and boost climate resilience. Long-term benefits include a more sustainable and future-proof city.

Buga 2033 will transform key areas of Dresden, with €120 million funding shared between the city and federal government. If the council approves the plans in 2026, construction could start by 2029. The project promises lasting news and improvements to the city’s environment and infrastructure.
