Soccer: Grammozis' Debut Shines as Lautern Advance in Cup

  1. FC Kaiserslautern, the second-division soccer team, started their new coach Dimitrios Grammozis' tenure on a high note, advancing to the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. On Tuesday night, they pulled off a 2-0 victory against league rivals 1. FC Nürnberg at the Fritz Walter Stadium, in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 48,349 spectators.

The Palatinate side put in an impressive display, although the first half was relatively uneventful, with both teams focusing on defense. Kaiserslautern, however, showed more intent in attack, with Marlon Ritter's shot saved by Christian Mathenia after 21 minutes. Nuremberg, on the other hand, offered little threat in front of goal.

Things picked up after the break, with Kaiserslautern scoring the opening goal in the 75th minute through Richmond Tachie. Ragnar Ache added the second just three minutes later, setting up the joker himself for a spectacular finish. Unfortunately, Ache was forced off the field due to injury before the full-time whistle.

Nürnberg failed to capitalize on the opportunity, their cup success from the previous season a distant memory. The quarter-finals, scheduled for January 30/31 and February 6/7, will present another chance for both teams to make their mark in this competition.

Noteworthy Facts

  1. Despite advancing to the quarter-finals, Kaiserslautern's story didn't end there. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the second round during Grammozis' tenure by VfB Stuttgart, losing 2-1 on February 5, 2025[1].

This time around, however, the atmosphere was electric, and Kaiserslautern dominated the second half, leaving no doubt about their victory. It was an ideal debut for Grammozis, offering a much-needed boost to the spirits of the long-suffering fans.
