Grêmio, who finished in 17th place, along with Bahia, Sport Recife, and Chapecoense, also join them in Série B.
But there is always a silver lining. Four teams will replace the relegated teams in Série A. Botafogo, Goiás, Curuíba, and Avaí will have the opportunity to compete at a higher level next season.
Seven of the Copa Libertadores qualified teams will proceed directly to the group stage, while two of them will enter the second qualifying round. Six clubs will participate in the Copa Sudamericana.
