Dramatist William Shakespeare's challenging life and misfortunes are depicted by Oscar-winning filmmaker Zhao in the film 'Hamnet'.

In the heart of 16th-century England, director Chloé Zhao premiered her new film, Hamnet, at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2022. The movie, set in a landscape of forests, greenery, and dark clouds, offers a unique perspective on the life of William Shakespeare and his family.

Hamnet is an adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's novel, and it portrays Shakespeare's life from the perspective of his wife Agnes, focusing on his role as a father and husband rather than his literary genius. Grief and sorrow are the main themes in the film, as it explores the story of the Shakespeare family, particularly the death of their 11-year-old son.

The film features a diverse team, with Chloé Zhao, who won several awards for her 2020 drama Nomadland, at the helm. Actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal play Agnes and Shakespeare, respectively. The movie includes moments of joy depicting Shakespeare as a father, as well as the challenges he and Agnes face in coping with their loss.

Chloé Zhao faced the challenge of staying in one location and being in stillness during the filming of Hamnet. She stated that there are no sunsets or magic hour in the film, as she wanted to emphasize the raw emotion and the harsh realities of the time.

The story of Hamnet takes place in Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare spends his early years. After raising his family, Shakespeare moves to London to become a playwright.

Paul Mescal, during an interview, expressed excitement about the diverse team behind the film, as it features two Irish actors and a Chinese director telling a story that is traditionally considered British.
