Weeks after the season's end, the 2nd Bundesliga of handball remains in the spotlight: The German Handball Association's highest court orders a replay of a match, with substantial implications.
In a jaw-dropping decision, the 2nd Bundesliga match between TUSEM Essen and Dessau-Roßlauer HV will be replayed. The German Handball Association's (DHB) Federal Court made this decision, citing a game-altering rule violation by the timekeeper and secretary in the April 27 game, which Dessau won 28:27 in Essen.
For Dessau-Roßlau, the replay could spell doom: If they lose the replayed game, they'll slide from 10th to second-to-last place in the table, facing relegation instead of ASV Hamm-Westfalen. An appeal against the DHB Federal Court's decision is not permitted, according to the Handball Bundesliga. The panel overturned a May 12 court decision and mandates that the game be replayed by June 30 at the latest.
During the final three seconds of the game, Dessau played with seven players on the field despite having one player on a time penalty. Neither the referees nor officials noticed this oversight, prompting Essen to file a protest against the game's result. "Based on TUSEM's opinion," the club explained, "the correct penalty would have been an additional 2-minute time penalty (including time-out), along with a change of ball possession. Essen would have had a good chance of scoring even with a few seconds remaining and securing a different game outcome."
Unpredictable Consequences
The 2nd Bundesliga handball league's situation remains fluid: Both Dessau-Roßlau and ASV Hamm-Westfalen are only two points apart, with Hamm boasting a better goal difference. TuSEM Essen, who instigated the replay with their protest, is already safe as 16th in the table, ensuring they can't lose any more points.
The replay will pose logistical challenges for both clubs: Dessau-Roßlau has bid farewell to long-time coach Uwe Jungandreas and five players, while TUSEM Essen has also lost five players. Despite their contracts lasting till July 1, numerous professional clubs will begin their summer break after the season's end. Moreover, one player from each team will play for Germany at the U21 World Championship from June 17 to 29.
According to Bild newspaper, ASV Hamm-Westfalen previously suggested increasing the number of teams in the 2nd Bundesliga to 19 for the next season, effectively nullifying the verdict's effects. While this replay is survival-stakes for Dessau-Roßlauer HV, it also matters for TUSEM Essen: If the former big club emerges victorious, they'll jump to 9th place in the table, securing a spot in the next DHB Cup.

- Implications for ASV Hamm-Westfalen: The outcome of the replay could indirectly impact ASV Hamm-Westfalen's league position if Dessau-Roßlauer HV gains fewer points, potentially leading to a better standings and potential promotion or relegation placement for ASV Hamm-Westfalen [4].

Sports such as football and handball are popular in Germany, with the 2nd Bundesliga of handball remaining in the spotlight due to an unforeseen replay verdict. In this case, the 2nd Bundesliga match between TUSEM Essen and Dessau-Roßlauer HV, initially won by Dessau, will be replayed due to a game-altering rule violation by the timekeeper and secretary. On the contrary, football might not be directly affected by this replay, but the outcomes could indirectly impact other teams like ASV Hamm-Westfalen, depending on the results.
