The remarkable turnaround of VfL Osnabrück in the 3rd division is nothing short of astonishing. In the first half of the season, a struggling team seemed destined for relegation, but in an astounding turnaround, they transformed into a top-tier squad, securing their place in the league earlier than expected.
The team's descent into the abyss began on a chilly Sunday evening before Christmas. After a 0:2 loss against Viktoria Köln, they had gone 8 straight games without a win, languishing at the bottom of the league with only 11 points from 17 games. The terrifying prospect of being relegated to the fourth division, a first in VfL's 125-year history, was all too real. But then, an explosion of change took place in Osnabrück, setting the stage for a fantastic journey.
It was early May when VfL faced Viktoria Köln again in the return match. They emerged victorious with a 2:0 win, and while relief filled the Stadion an der Bremer Brücke, it wasn't until the other matches of the 36th round that the news broke: VfL had achieved the seemingly impossible and secured their place in the league. The secret to their miraculous success?
The turning point stemmed from a series of tough decisions. With the team struggling, sports director Philipp Kaufmann and head coach Pit Reimers were both dismissed, along with their assistants. Michael Welling, responsible for matters off the pitch, stepped into the vacuum left behind. "I believe that a leadership void led us into this crisis in the first place," Welling stated in an interview with ntv.de. "We had to make a very hard cut, a very tough decision."
Welling aimed to restore order and clarity within the club, an endeavor that was massively overwhelmed by Kaufmann, who was newly appointed and hopelessly overwhelmed by his responsibilities. One telltale sign was the incomplete 3rd league squad that VFL fielded, despite a decision to relegate from the 2nd Bundesliga being made early in the season.
As part of their rebuilding effort, VFL underwent a squad overhaul during the winter transfer window. Seven players departed, making way for seven new arrivals. Among the departures was Erik Engelhardt, the team's top scorer from the previous season, who chose to pursue promotion with Energie Cottbus instead of fighting against relegation with VfL Osnabrück. Welling made the difficult decision to let Engelhardt go in pursuit of a cohesive team.
A Season Savior in Marco Antwerpen
One of the newcomers was Marco Antwerpen, a veteran coach with experience leading 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Waldhof Mannheim to survival in relegation battles. Antwerpen began with a bang, securing a 2:0 home victory against Rot-Weiss Essen and a 1:1 draw at SC Verl before the winter break, and remained unbeaten for a long stretch afterward. He focused specifically on solidifying the defense, which had previously been the worst in the league with 35 goals conceded in 17 games. This transformation, spearheaded by Jannik Müller's arrival, proved crucial in their ultimate success.
The team's fortunes improved significantly in the second half of the season, earning an impressive 37 points in 19 games. This outstanding performance surpassed that of any other third-division team during that period. How did this happen? The team rallied around Antwerpen's clear ideas and strategies, becoming a unified force on the pitch.
A Sea of Fans, a Testimony to Osnabrück's Resilience
Throughout the remarkable second half of the season, fans flocked to VfL's home games in record numbers, bucking the gloomy predictions that accompanied the team's initial struggles. 18 different goal scorers contributed to the team's statistics, with different players stepping up in crucial moments, such as Chance Simakala, who scored the winning goal against 1860 Munich after previously shuttling between the bench and the stands.
Despite the first half's disappointing finish and VfL's second-worst position in the club's long history, the team managed to celebrate their birthday just before the crucial home win against Viktoria. For a while, it appeared as though the festivities might turn into a wake, but the Osnabrückers persevered, drawing a crowd of at least 13,000 fans for each of their home games, with four games selling out. The chant "We are the Osnabrückers, we are always here!" echoed true more than ever.
