The Swell Season Reunites and Releases New Album 'Forward'

After a decade-long hiatus, the critically acclaimed musical duo, The Swell Season, has reconvened and released a new album, 'Forward'. The band, composed of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, is set to perform at the Greek Theatre on Sept. 19.

The reunion was initiated by Markéta Irglová, who called Glen Hansard, leading to a meeting at Mel's Drive-In on Sunset Blvd. during Hansard's visit for Eddie Vedder's Ohana Festival. The decision to reunite came after Irglová wondered if their creative connection had withstood the intervening years since their last tour in 2009.

The making of the album, 'Forward', took place over three sessions at Irglová's home studio. The process was documented in a 45-minute making-of documentary called 'The Forward Journey'. The album was produced by Sturla Mio Thorisson, Irglová's husband.

Family life played a significant role in the creation of the album. Grandparents and children participated in backyard activities and provided background vocals. One of the songs, 'Factory Street Bells', mentions Irglová's 3-year-old son, Christy. Another track, 'Hundred Words', came to Irglová in a dream. She still hasn't identified the specific terms she wanted from a partner.

Glen Hansard, 55, is a father and husband to Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa. He splits his time between Helsinki, Dublin, and wherever his touring schedule takes him. Hansard admitted that he is 'institutionalized by touring', noting his four solo albums that needed promoting. However, he believes that Irglová is unique in her ability to harmonize with him.

The duo's dynamic on stage has changed, with Irglová's contributions becoming more prominent and challenging Hansard. This evolution is evident in their live performances, where Irglová shines as a formidable force next to Hansard.

The Swell Season rose to fame in 2008 when they won the award for best original song at the Oscars for their song 'Falling Slowly' from the film 'Once'. Their Oscar speeches, particularly Hansard's appeal to 'make art, make art!', and host Jon Stewart bringing Irglová back on stage post-commercial break, became memorable and resonated with the public.

Following their Oscar win, the duo embarked on a relentless tour. This period also marked an ill-fated love affair in real life. Almost 20 years later, the Swell Season is back, ready to captivate audiences once more with their hauntingly beautiful music.

In a surprising turn of events, Hansard has stopped drinking alcohol due to lack of time and emotional space. He keeps track of the number of days without alcohol by writing it on his inner wrist.

The Swell Season's comeback is a testament to the enduring power of music and the creative bond between two artists. Fans of the duo are eagerly awaiting their performance at the Greek Theatre in September.
