Dramatic Arts Department Stages Sweeney Todd Performance
Holy Cross Brings Dark Humour to the Stage with "Sweeney Todd"
The Prior Performing Arts Center at Holy Cross is set to host a chilling and captivating production of the musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street". Directed by Meaghan Deiter, this harrowing and jarring tale of a bloodthirsty barber is set to open on Thursday.
The show invites the audience to "attend the tale of Sweeney Todd", and with 26 students in the cast, 15 in the orchestra, and 12 students running technical aspects, it's set to be the biggest production the Luth has seen so far. Jimmy Duffy, the sophomore who stars as Sweeney Todd, describes the experience as filled with joy and a great bonding experience.
"Sweeney Todd" is a hilariously dark musical that was created in 1979 by Stephen Sondheim. The musical is renowned for its dark, gothic, and psychological themes, which resonate particularly well with the spooky Halloween spirit.
The modern aesthetic used in the production enhances the performance by emphasizing these themes. Minimalist sets, atmospheric lighting, sleek and dark costumes with contemporary textures or cuts, and innovative multimedia projections are employed to create an immersive and haunting atmosphere. This approach allows the audience to focus on the emotional intensity and narrative without distraction from overly complex sets.
In addition to "Sweeney Todd", the Prior Performing Arts Center will also host a series of performances of William Shakespeare's "Cymbeline". This fairy tale about an ancient king named Cymbeline is scheduled to take place between October 31st and November 10th. Rachel Golden, a senior in the production, encourages the Holy Cross community to attend the show, stating that it's a blast to be a part of.
Tickets for "Sweeney Todd" are available for purchase on the Prior Performing Arts website, and are reduced to $15 for the Holy Cross community. The International Edgar Allan Poe Festival in Baltimore is commemorated on the first weekend of October, making it the perfect time to immerse yourself in the spooky spirit of Holy Cross's productions.
