Drake's Defamation Lawsuit Against UMG Dismissed

A United States federal judge has dismissed Lamar Jackson's lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG). The case centred around Kendrick Lamar's 'Not Like Us' track, which Jackson claimed was defamatory.

Jackson initially filed the suit in January 2025. Despite amending his complaint to focus on UMG's promotion of the track at high-profile events like the Super Bowl and Grammy Awards, the judge ruled against him. The judge deemed Lamar's lyrics a nonactionable opinion, not defamatory, citing the context of a rap battle as a key factor in her decision. UMG has expressed satisfaction with the court's dismissal and looks forward to continuing to promote Jackson's music.

The dismissal of Jackson's lawsuit means UMG can continue promoting both artists without legal hindrance. The ruling also sets a precedent for artistic expression within the rap genre, affirming the creative freedom of artists like Kendrick Lamar.
