In the serene waters of Spreewald, Andrea Bunar, Germany's only 'Kahnpostfrau' or canal postal worker, navigates her yellow boat alongside captivating residents such as beavers, grass snakes, kingfishers, storks, and swans, making her one of the most remarkable postal workers in the country. This obscure workplace has marked the beginning of another season for Bunar. During the summer, she caters to the mail needs of 65 households, all of which have no direct road access[1][2].
"It's enthralling every year, with something new to discover," reminisces Bunar, who prefers plying the waters over a mere car. To navigate through the intricate network of small streams, Bunar uses a roughly four-meter-long pole, colloquially known as a "rudge." On average, she covers around eight kilometers each day and travel nearly 1,100 kilometers during the season. In addition to her boat journeys, she still makes morning deliveries in Lübbenau by car[1].
Interaction with the local wildlife, coupled with warm relations with villagers, adds an enchanting layer to Bunar's daily routine. "Sometimes there's coffee or a piece of cake on birthdays," Bunar fondly recalls. Occasional minor collisions with tourists who rent canoes are common[1].
