Flickin' Fantastic! How to Train Your Dragon Roars into Box Office Success

In a world where reboots and remakes reign supreme, the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon has quite literally stolen the show. Despite appearances of rehash, this DreamWorks production has become a blockbuster sensation, with audiences seemingly can't get enough of it.

With a staggering 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, How to Train Your Dragon is breaking records among the likes of recent live-action animation adaptations, mostly from Disney. Here's the rundown:

  • How to Train Your Dragon – 98%
  • Aladdin – 94%
  • Lilo and Stitch – 93%
  • The Little Mermaid – 93%
  • Mufasa: The Lion King – 89%
  • The Lion King (2019) – 88%
  • The Jungle Book – 86%
  • Beauty and the Beast – 80%
  • Cinderella – 78%
  • Snow White – 71%
  • Maleficent – 70%
  • Mulan – 46%

How to Train Your Dragon scores higher than both the remake and the original movie. The record-breaking score makes it the only non-Disney film among the bunch, and it's DreamWorks' debut in the live-action adaptation game. No other live-action DreamWorks projects have been announced, but after this astronomical success, it's only a matter of time before they cook up something spectacular – perhaps even Shrek.

In tribute to the excellent score, How to Train Your Dragon also sports an "A" from recent screenings, a stellar rating in the grand scheme of things. Audiences are often more receptive to these adaptation projects than sometimes-disgruntled critics who are less enthused about revivals of decades-old movies. For many families, it's a way to relive these cherished classics in a modern setting, or introduce them to their kids for the first time. I, for one, was quite taken with Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. I'm eager to catch How to Train Your Dragon, but my kiddo's not quite ready yet.

As we watch the box office numbers for How to Train Your Dragon soar, one can't help but wonder what we might expect next from DreamWorks – the sequel, perhaps? Stay tuned.
