"Dragon Training Guide Set for Top Box Office Debut"
Updated Weekend Box Office Report
The latest addition to the big screen, How to Train Your Dragon, starring Gerard Butler, has knocked Lilo & Stitch off its long-standing perch at the top of the domestic box office.
Lilo & Stitch, a remake of the popular 2002 Disney animated film, had reigned supreme since its debut on May 23, outperforming blockbusters like Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Karate Kid: Legends, and From the World of John Wick: Ballerina.
With How to Train Your Dragon, however, Lilo & Stitch has finally met its match. Deadline predicts that the DreamWorks/Universal Pictures film will earn an estimated $83.7 million from 4,356 North American theaters through Sunday, securing the number one spot domestically.
In the new How to Train Your Dragon, Butler plays the character he voiced in the animated film, while Mason Thames steps into the shoes of Hiccup, the accident-prone son who forms a bond with a Night Fury dragon named Toothless. Nico Parker takes on the role of Hiccup's teen Viking rival-turned-ally, Astrid.
Meanwhile, Lilo & Stitch is projected by Deadline to earn $15.5 million from 3,675 theaters domestically, boosting its worldwide take to $365.4 million.
New to theaters this weekend is the romantic comedy Materialists, an A24 release directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Celine Song, and starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans. Deadline predicts that Materialists will earn an estimated $12 million from 2,844 North American theaters through Sunday.
The battle for the fourth spot is between Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and John Wick spinoff film Ballerina. As of now, The Final Reckoning is projected to earn $9.3 million from 2,942 North American theaters, while Ballerina is on track for an $8.7 million take from 3,409 venues. If these projections hold, it will boost Ballerina's domestic tally to $41.1 million and enhance The Final Reckoning's North American box office take to $165.3 million.
The box office report will be updated throughout the weekend with the most recent numbers as they become available, with the final numbers for this weekend's box office to be released on Monday.
