"Dragon Training Film Records Impressive Debut at Box Office"
Weekend box office results are in, and a new champion has emerged! The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, starring Gerard Butler, has taken the top spot, bumping Lilo & Stitch from its long-held position.
Since its release on May 23, Lilo & Stitch reigned supreme at both domestic and worldwide box offices. With touching tales of friendship and laughter, it left competitors such as Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Karate Kid: Legends, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina in its wake. But now, How to Train Your Dragon is the new king of the domestic box office.
The newcomer is projected by Deadline to rake in an impressive $83.7 million from 4,356 North American theaters by Sunday's end. A Delta-winged rise indeed!
Gerard Butler, who lent his voice to the role of Chief Stoic the Vast in the original film, stars as the character in the live-action adaptation. Joining him are up-and-coming actors: Mason Thames as the accident-prone son, Hiccup, who links hearts with a Night Fury dragon he christens Toothless; and Nico Parker as Hiccup's teen Viking rival-turned-ally, Astrid.
Meanwhile, Lilo & Stitch is forecasted by Deadline to pull in $15.5 million from 3,675 domestic theaters over the weekend. This boost will elevate its worldwide box office earnings to a whopping $366.3 million.
Newcomers aren't salty about stealing the spotlight though. Making its debut this weekend is Oscar-nominated filmmaker Celine Song's romantic comedy, Materialists. Starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, expect this A24 release to earn $12 million from 2,844 North American theaters through Sunday.
The race for the No. 4 spot is heating up between Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and John Wick spinoff Ballerina. According to Deadline, The Final Reckoning could earn $10.3 million from 2,942 North American theaters, while Ballerina takes aim at an $9.4 million take from 3,409 venues.
As we wait for the final weekend box office numbers to be announced on Monday, keep your eyes glued to the silver screen!
