DraftKings signs a significant multi-year contract with Barstool Sports
Barstool Sports and DraftKings Team Up for Free-Throw Challenge
In an exciting turn of events, Barstool Sports and DraftKings have announced a multi-year sports betting media partnership. This partnership, first reported by Sportico in January, saw PENN Entertainment paying $1.5 billion to obtain the licensing rights for ESPN Bet, leading to PENN giving up on its Barstool Sportsbook in favor of this new partnership.
The partnership will culminate in a unique event: a free-throw challenge. The goal is to make 41 free throws in a row, a record set by the National Basketball Association. Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, will be a key participant, required to make the 15th, 30th, and 41st free throws.
Each team member must complete at least two free throws and up to 10 free throws. The event will be streamed live, with Nick Turani and KB providing commentary. Portnoy and Dan will select team members for each round.
The free-throw challenge will also incorporate questions for viewers to answer. Those who answer the most questions correctly will win a share of the $100,000 prize pool.
In August 2023, PENN sold 100% of its Barstool Sports shares to Dave Portnoy. This sale occurred after PENN agreed to rebrand their sportsbook while eliminating Barstool from the equation, which may have been subject to a non-compete clause that prevented Barstool Sports from finalizing the partnership until after the Super Bowl, won by the Kansas City Chiefs.
The identity of the team participating in the Free-Throw Challenge, as well as its members, remains undisclosed in the available information.
On February 11, Portnoy announced a new multi-million-dollar partnership with DraftKings. This partnership marks a significant milestone for both parties, promising an exciting blend of sports, betting, and entertainment.
In a separate development, DraftKings executives Jason Robins, Paul Liberman, and Stanton Dodge sold close to $78.8 million worth of stock before the release of the company's fourth quarter and 2023 results.
As the details of this partnership unfold, fans can expect a thrilling free-throw challenge and a continued collaboration between Barstool Sports and DraftKings in the realm of sports betting media.
