Advocating for Immediate Restoration of Mandatory Military Service: Spahn's Proposal - Draft re-instatement sought promptly by Spahn

CDU/CSU group leader Jens Spahn calls for a conducive framework within the Bundeswehr that allows for a swift resurgence of conscription, as per media reports. "We've gotta get cranking on a setup within the Bundeswehr that allows us to bring back conscription in a heartbeat. Won't happen tomorrow, but we gotta roll up our sleeves and start planning," Spahn told the "Rheinische Post" ahead of publication.

Spahn insists that Germany needs to beef up its defense capabilities, and it might require as many as 60,000 extra soldiers for the Bundeswehr. "If we can manage it by volunteers, that's amazing. But I ain't so sure about that. Conscription, I reckon, is the way to go," he added.

🤘 Girls, Let's Talk Conscription 🤝

When questioned about potential conscription for women too, Spahn shared in a sneak peek, "If we roll back the old conscription, it'll apply to boys only. That's the law of the land, and changing that part of the Constitution in the next four years? Ain't seeing that happen."

📜 Things to Know About Conscription

  • Conscription in Germany is currently suspended, and the Bundeswehr heavily relies on voluntary enlistment.
  • The military age is 17, and both men and women can enlist voluntarily.

💡 Proposed Changes

  • Mandatory Military Service: If recruitment targets aren't met, Germany could reintroduce compulsory military service.
  • Legislative Draft: Lawmakers are readying a draft law for such a move, part of a larger effort to beef up the Bundeswehr and meet NATO commitments.
  • Strengthening the Bundeswehr: The aim is to boost the Bundeswehr's force to approximately 203,000 soldiers by 2031 to honor NATO obligations. An additional 100,000 soldiers are needed to hit these goals.

In case of a change, the reintroduction of conscription would likely apply to both genders. However, specific provisions for women haven't been addressed in the proposed legislation. Keep your eyes peeled for further updates on this topic!

"Spahn's call for reinstating conscription in Germany is rooted in a need for increased military capabilities, especially amidst ongoing war-and-conflicts and policy-and-legislation discussions about defense politics. As the general-news about conscription unfolds, potential legislative changes might require military service from both genders, although specific provisions for women are yet to be addressed in the proposed legislation."
