Dr. Phil faces off with Bill Maher over joining the Trump administration's controversial ICE operations
In a recent episode of HBO's Real Time, host Bill Maher confronted Dr. Phil McGraw about his involvement in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids during the Trump administration.
Dr. Phil, known for his television show and media empire, defended his participation, arguing that ICE targets serious criminals first and that family separations happen in many contexts of law enforcement, not only immigration raids. He claimed that his involvement was aimed at documenting and arguing the necessity of these actions.
During the exchange, Dr. Phil highlighted his personal involvement in ICE raids in Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as his use of his MeritTV network to cover the raids. He framed the raids as necessary actions removing dangerous individuals from communities, citing "rap sheets" of severe offenders to justify these operations.
Maher, however, questioned the fairness and targeting of these raids, noting that many arrested were workers or not the worst criminals initially advertised. He described the ICE raids as something President Donald Trump is doing as he is "doubling down on unpopular."
ESPN's Stephen A. Smith echoed Maher's concerns, arguing that ICE is targeting people in places like workplaces, churches, and other properties, which is different than what they originally advertised. Smith supports "closing the borders," but argues that the administration's actions do not match their words.
Notably, Dr. Phil compared his involvement in ICE raids to separating families when a citizen commits a crime or is DUI with a child in the backseat. He also defended his participation by citing "files" of child predators that ICE is taking off the street.
In a separate context, Dr. Phil criticized the media for creating criminals by distorting LA riot coverage.
The exchange between Maher and Dr. Phil occurred on Aug. 8. Stephanie Samsel, a digital production assistant at a certain website and a previous writer for Campus Reform and the Media Research Center, has reported on the controversy.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump toured a migrant detention center, referred to as "Alligator Alcatraz," located at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport in Ochopee, Florida. The tour came amidst ongoing debates about immigration policies and enforcement.
