Scottish Golfers Disqualified from Nexo Championship
The Nexo Championship at Trump International Golf Links in Scotland has seen a surprising turn of events with the disqualification of two of its betting favorites, Sam Bairstow and Calum Hill, due to separate rule violations.
Sam Bairstow's Scorecard Error
Bairstow, who started the tournament strong, was three-under through 13 holes in the first round. However, his game took a turn for the worse at the par-4 14th hole. He recorded a triple-bogey seven, followed by a double-bogey at 15 and a drop at the par-5 closing hole. The error in his scorecard occurred at the 14th hole, where he had actually made a seven due to missing a penalty stroke after hitting a provisional ball. His playing partners failed to notice the error, and signing for a lower score than actually made is a violation that leads to disqualification in professional golf.
Calum Hill's Withdrawal
Calum Hill, on the other hand, was disqualified after walking off the course during his second round. Hill was struggling to make the cut and, during the second round on the 8th hole, after failing multiple times to make par putts, he picked up his ball and left the course, effectively withdrawing from the round. This action resulted in his disqualification from the tournament.
Hill's Performance
Calum Hill started the second round with a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole, but his performance on the back nine in the first round (a torrid nine holes) and a series of unfortunate events in the second round led to his disqualification. He finished round one at four-over and made a second birdie on the par-5 first hole in the second round, but followed it with a bogey at the second hole. His tournament ended after two more failed attempts at holing out from inside a couple of feet at the eighth hole in the second round.
Impact on the Tournament
Both incidents ended the chances of Bairstow and Hill in the Nexo Championship. Bairstow had missed three cuts and withdrawn from another of his five most recent appearances, while Hill was not due to fall beyond his current position of 26th in the Race To Dubai. Despite their disqualifications, the tournament continues, with Richard Sterne leading after the first round at five-under.
Sports analysis reveals that Richard Sterne's strong start in the Nexo Championship, now devoid of Sam Bairstow and Calum Hill due to rule violations and withdrawals, positions him favorably. Despite Bairstow's initial three-under start and Calum Hill's early birdie, golf-related errors and poor performances ultimately led to their disqualification from the tournament, leaving the door open for Sterne in the sports realm.
