Wild Animal Feeding Infractions in Berlin Uncovered

Let's talk about the wild side of Berlin - the side that's been playing fast and loose with the city's wildlife feeding ban. From 2020 to 2023, the city saw a total of 37 violations, as reported by the Senate Department for the Environment in response to a parliamentary question posed by CDU MP Dennis Haustein. Not all of these transgressions resulted in fines, but in theory, illegal feeding could net you a hefty fine up to 5K euros.

To sway park visitors towards compliance, efforts are being made to beef up educational initiatives, particularly through on-site outreach efforts. One reason for the feeding ban is the wild animals should retain their natural independence; they shouldn't get accustomed to having humans as their unofficial pantry. Moreover, non-native food sources can be harmful to these creatures, including favorites like bread and scraps. These extras attract unpleasant pests and can contribute to issues like oxygen depletion and fish kills in bodies of water.

Recently, the city of Steglitz-Zehlendorf took the opportunity to remind residents of the feeding ban, emphasizing the importance of leaving wild boars alone; believing the misconception that they're starving doesn't make feeding them any less detrimental. In fact, these animals have developed effective survival strategies in the face of food scarcity, and feeding them may encourage a dangerous familiarity with humans. Maintaining a safe distance between humans and wildlife is crucial for coexistence.

Berlin's Wildlife Feeding Regulations and Penalties

Feed the birds, but not the wild ones! In Berlin, the violation of wildlife feeding bans can lead to fines. The city has put measures in place to deal with this issue:

  1. Feeding Ban: Ducks, geese, and all wild animals are prohibited from being fed on public or city-owned property.
  2. Penalties: Engaging in this forbidden activity may result in fines, aiming to discourage future violations.
  3. Public Awareness: The city ensures visitors are aware of the ban through various educational channels, including public announcements, signage, and community events.
  4. Emergency Alerting System: Berlin has transitioned to an advanced emergency notification system called Genasys, allowing the city to alert residents and visitors about important reminders, including the feeding ban.
  5. Community Engagement: The city's wildlife management and environmental protection efforts align with broader community engagement initiatives, engendering public participation through educational programs, events, and collaborations with local animal welfare organizations.
