Downpours and flooding risks intensify throughout Thailand due to monsoon season.

Heavy downpours and flood warnings persist across Thailand, as the monsoon trough lingers in the lower North, upper Central region, lower Northeast, and the Eastern part of the country, according to the Thai Meteorological Department's forecast released on Wednesday.

Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Warnings Across Thailand

Thailand is currently battling heavy rains and increased flood risks due to the ongoing influence of the Southwest monsoon. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued warnings for severe weather conditions across numerous provinces, most notably in the North and Northeast regions.

The past few days have seen several instances of flash floods, landslides, and breaches in river levees, such as the Mesai River in Chiang Rai, leading to evacuations and damage to communities.

In a press release, the TMD warned that citizens in affected areas should remain cautious of heavy rainfall and water accumulation, which could trigger flash floods and overflows, being particularly mindful in waterways, foothills, and lowland areas. Additionally, the public is encouraged to maintain good health during this unpredictable weather period.

Farmers are recommended to strengthen their drainage systems in agricultural areas to minimize the damage to crops and livestock as a result of the heavy rainfall. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea have also been advised to stay ashore due to potentially rough sea conditions.

Strong winds are expected to push waves in the upper Andaman Sea to a height of 2 meters, with waves measuring 1 to 2 meters in the lower Andaman Sea and exceeding 2 meters during thunderstorms. The authorities warn all vessels in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to exercise caution and avoid sailing in areas experiencing thunderstorms.

The weather forecast for the coming 24 hours is as follows:

  • North: Picture widespread thunderstorms and isolated heavy to very heavy rains in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun; temperature between 23 and 25°C during the day and 29 to 33°C maximum.
  • Northeast: Experience widespread thunderstorms and isolated heavy rains in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Ubon Ratchathani; temperature between 23 and 25°C during the day and 32 to 34°C maximum.
  • Central: Expect scattered thunderstorms and isolated heavy rains in Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi; temperature between 23 and 26°C during the day and 33 to 35°C maximum.
  • East: Prepare for scattered thunderstorms and isolated heavy rains in Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat; temperature between 24 and 25°C during the day and 32 to 34°C maximum; waves reaching around a meter high, climbing above 2 meters in thunderstorms.
  • South (east coast): Prepare for scattered thunderstorms mostly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumphon; temperature between 23 and 25°C during the day and 33 to 35°C maximum; waves reaching around a meter high, climbing above 2 meters in thunderstorms.
  • South (west coast): Prepare for scattered thunderstorms and isolated heavy rains in Ranong and Phang Nga; temperature between 24 and 26°C during the day and 30 to 34°C maximum; waves reaching about 1 to 2 meters high, climbing above 2 meters in thunderstorms.
  • Bangkok metropolitan area: Anticipate widespread thunderstorms; temperature between 25 and 26°C during the day and 32 to 35°C maximum.

Residents are urged to stay informed and adhere to the advice of local authorities to ensure safety and minimize damage from the adverse weather conditions.
