Mateusz "Gamer" Gamrot, a Polish UFC lightweight, has been named the backup fighter for the highly-anticipated UFC 294 lightweight title fight between reigning champion Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira. Despite being ranked sixth in the UFC lightweight division, Gamrot's impressive credentials and performance in the UFC lightweight division have earned him this opportunity.

With an 8-2 record in the UFC, Gamrot has proven his worth since debuting in October 2020. His last fight took place at UFC Fight Night 228, where he secured a TKO victory over Rafael "Ataman" Fiziev, who unfortunately suffered a knee injury and couldn't continue in the match.

Gamrot's well-rounded skills, experience, and readiness to compete at a high level make him a suitable choice as a backup. He has a solid wrestling and grappling background, with extensive competition experience starting from a young age. This background, combined with his proven ability to compete with top contenders, supports the UFC's decision to have him on standby for a title fight.

Before joining the UFC, Gamrot held titles in the lightweight and featherweight divisions in the Polish promotion KSW. His experience in European circuits and toughness in the lightweight division might have given the promotion confidence in his suitability as a backup option for UFC 294.

The UFC's choice for backup fighters often considers factors beyond just rankings, such as stylistic matchups, fighter availability, and readiness to step in on short notice. These factors likely contributed to Gamrot being selected over higher-ranked American fighters.

UFC 294 is scheduled for October 21 in Abu Dhabi. The reigning lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, boasts an impressive record of 24-1, while Charles Oliveira has a record of 34-9. As the backup fighter, Gamrot will be ready to step in should either Makhachev or Oliveira be unable to compete.
