Mel Gibson, the acclaimed director of the historical epic "Hacksaw Ridge," is gearing up for his next ambitious project – a two-part film titled "The Resurrection of the Christ." Scheduled for release in spring 2027, the films are expected to delve into the life and teachings of Jesus Christ following his crucifixion.

The first part of the film is set to premiere on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, while the second part will be released forty days later on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027. The films are a sequel to Gibson's controversial crucifixion film from 2004, "The Passion of the Christ."

Gibson, a devout Catholic, has reportedly funded the films to the tune of $30 million with his own money. The main cast reprises Jim Caviezel as Jesus, who also starred in the original film. Gibson is directing and co-writing alongside Randall Wallace.

The plot is shrouded in secrecy, but it is widely believed that the story will explore events related to Jesus' resurrection, particularly focusing on his return to confront his disciples and followers. Some reports suggest the narrative might delve into the "Harrowing of Hell," a theme not explicitly covered in the Bible but popular in Christian tradition.

The films have been in development for nearly a decade and are backed by Lionsgate worldwide distribution. Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate chairman, announced the studio's involvement in May. Despite criticism for its graphic violence and antisemitic undertones, Gibson's last directorial effort, "Hacksaw Ridge," received an Oscar nomination for Best Director for Gibson.

In recent news, Gibson released the thriller "Flight Risk" with Mark Wahlberg in February. The first film in the series, also directed by Gibson, was a commercial sensation, grossing over $610 million worldwide despite its R rating.

As we approach the release of "The Resurrection of the Christ," the anticipation is palpable. With Gibson's reputation for creating powerful, thought-provoking films, this new project promises to be a significant religious and cinematic event.

"Mel Gibson's upcoming films, 'The Resurrection of the Christ,' is scheduled to release in two parts under the genre of movies-and-tv, serving as a continuation of his celebrated religious-themed works, including 'The Passion of the Christ.'"

"The two-part film series, set to premiere in 2027, is anticipated to present Gibson's vision of Jesus Christ's resurrection, promising another fascinating and thought-provoking addition to the entertainment landscape."
