Thuringia's Tourism Surging Post-Pandemic

After weathering the tourism slump during the pandemic, Thuringia is experiencing a resurgence this year. According to the State Statistical Office's recent report, the region welcomed 2.9 million guests between January and September, accounting for 7.7 million overnight stays. Compared to the same period last year, guest numbers increased by 13.2%, and overnight stays by 10.4%. Thuringia outperformed the national trend with an 9.3% increase in overnight stays up until September.

All tourism areas within the state rejoiced in this growth, with the Thuringian Forest and Erfurt, the state capital, being the main beneficiaries. Tourists visited these areas primarily for short trips, averaging a 2.6-day stay. The growth in foreign tourists was particularly notable, with an increase of nearly 25% to 185,000 guests compared to the same period in 2021.

The Thuringian Forest, the largest tourism sector, recorded a guest increase of 11.9%, with 955,000 visitors making bookings for a total of 3 million overnight stays – an impressive 7.2% growth compared to the previous year. Erfurt also saw a significant growth in both guests and overnight stays, approximately a fifth higher.
