Watzke on allegations of abuse at BVB: "One shudders" - Dortmund’s Abuse Scandal Deepens as Ex-Employee Faces Renewed Claims

Borussia Dortmund has faced fresh scrutiny over historical abuse allegations after managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke addressed the issue in an emotional speech. The club has now launched an independent investigation into claims involving a former employee, identified as Heiermann, who was previously accused of sexual harassment in the 1990s. Watzke, who recently stepped down as managing director, has pledged full transparency as the case unfolds.

The allegations centre on Heiermann, a long-standing figure at Borussia Dortmund. In the 1990s, he was accused of sexual harassment but remained involved with the club, serving multiple terms on the council of elders. By 2012, he had returned as an employee—despite the earlier claims.

In 2022, Heiermann reportedly held private conversations with former players and their families without the board’s knowledge. Many players had previously sought his support, raising concerns about his continued influence. The accused individual no longer works for the club.

Watzke revealed that he had referred the abuse claims to then-president Reinhard Rauball years earlier. Rauball assured him the matter was resolved, yet Heiermann was later re-elected to the council and employed by the association. Now, two law firms have been tasked with investigating the claims.

During his speech, Watzke described the case as deeply personal and expressed sympathy for survivors. He confirmed that if any institutional failures are uncovered, steps will be taken to prevent future incidents.

The investigation into Borussia Dortmund’s handling of abuse claims is now underway. Watzke, who is expected to become president of the registered association, has stressed the need for accountability. The findings will determine whether further action is required to address past oversights.
