The match started with both teams eager to secure a win. Karim Adeyemi had a promising chance for Dortmund in the 34th minute, but Köln's goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe made a crucial save. Schwäbe continued to shine throughout the game, making several vital stops to keep his side in contention.

In the 53rd minute, Serhou Guirassy had a golden opportunity for Köln, but Schwäbe was once again equal to the task. Despite Dortmund's dominance, with 25 shots compared to Köln's five, the game remained goalless until the sixth minute of stoppage time. Said El Mala missed Köln's best chance in the 19th minute, highlighting the team's struggles in front of goal.

Timo Hübers' injury in the 72nd minute further complicated matters for Köln. The defender was stretchered off with a knee injury, leaving the team to play with ten men. This proved to be the turning point as Maximilian Beier scored the winning goal for Dortmund in the dying moments of the game.

The victory lifts Borussia Dortmund to third place in the league, while 1. FC Köln slip to eighth after the loss. Kwasniok's side will need to improve their finishing and shore up their defence if they are to climb the table.
