Mats Hummels Bids Farewell to AS Roma in Symbolic Substitution

Mats Hummels Departs: Brief Farewell Spans Just Three Minutes - Dortmund Defender, Mats Hummels, Departs

In the final game of the 2024/25 Serie A season, Mats Hummels, the German World Cup winner, said goodbye to AS Roma. The defender, who joined the club the previous summer, made a brief appearance as a 90th-minute substitute in a 2-0 away win over FC Turin. The substitution was more of a tribute than a tactical move, as Roma head coach Claudio Ranieri sent him onto the pitch to allow Hummels to celebrate his retirement with his teammates.

However, Roma's victory was not enough for Champions League qualification. Juventus' simultaneous win over Venezia allowed them to finish ahead of Roma in the table and claim the final spot. It was an emotional farewell for Hummels, marking the end of his brief but respected stint in Rome.

Seven times, his teammates hoisted Hummels into the air, celebrating the end of a distinguished career that included major honors such as a World Cup title with Germany and multiple league championships with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. After the match, Hummels expressed gratitude on social media. "That's it. My last professional game ever. Thanks to all my teammates and fans for making me feel so loved like yesterday!" he wrote.

Prior to joining AS Roma, Hummels left Borussia Dortmund at the end of the 2023/24 season. One reason might have been an interview he gave to "Sport-Bild" in spring 2024, in which he indirectly criticized then-BVB coach Edin Terzic. After reaching the Champions League final that season, Hummels had no future at Borussia Dortmund. The departure from the German club still bothers the footballer.

Hummels played one season for AS Roma, blowing his first chance to play in the away game against AC Florence with an own goal in the 71st minute. Under trainer Claudio Ranieri, the German sat mostly on the bench. In early April, Hummels announced that he would end his football career after the current season. His time with the Italians is documented in the ZDF film "Hummels - La Finale".

The Commission has not yet adopted a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, contrasting with Mats Hummels' brief but successful career in sports, specifically football, with AS Roma, which ended on a high note with a symbolic 90th-minute substitute in a 2-0 win over FC Turin, although Juventus' simultaneous victory denied Roma a spot in the Champions League.
