The small screen says goodbye to a distinct character actor: Dietmar Mössmer is no more. The Austrian thespian, recognized by many for his role as Sergente Alvise in the "Donna Leon" adaptations, breathed his last on Friday at age 69 following a long battle with illness, as reported by "tirol.ORF.at".

Born on August 10, 1955, in Zams, Tyrol, this native Tyrolean started his journey in the acting world about four decades ago, balancing both stage and screen performances. His multi-dimensional acting skills made him a valuable performer in numerous German and Austrian productions.

A Career Rooted in Theater

Mössmer's acting career kicked off on stage. He graduated from the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck after studying acting, landing his first engagement there from 1980 to 1982. A significant turning point in his career occurred when acclaimed actress and director Ruth Drexel hired him for the newly founded Munich People's Theatre in 1983. He stayed with this troupe, with brief interruptions, until 1991.

Summer months often found Mössmer back in his Tyrolean homeland, performing in the People's Shows in Telfs. His portrayal of Norg in Felix Mitterer's "Drachendurst" left a lasting impression.

Mössmer's big-screen debut came in 1984 with Christian Berger's "Raffl". This was the first of about 40 film productions featuring renowned directors. However, his television breakthrough came with his role in the ARD crime series adapted from the "Commissario Brunetti" novels by the U.S.-American Swiss author Donna Leon (82).

The Man Behind Sergente Alvise

For 19 years, from 2000 to 2019, Dietmar Mössmer essaysed the somewhat bumbling yet endearing Sergente Alvise in the "Donna Leon" adaptations. His character quickly endeared himself to fans, rising far above just a sidekick to the Commissario. The special camaraderie between him and Uwe Kockisch (81), who played Commissario Brunetti, significantly contributed to the series' success.

Apart from his starring role in "Donna Leon", Mössmer appeared in numerous TV productions such as "SOKO Munich", "Der Alte", "Polizeiruf 110", "Tatort", "Die Rosenheim-Cops", "Der Bergdoktor", or "Der Bulle von Toelz".

Among his last television roles were appearances in the ARD film "My Father, the Donkey, and I" and an episode of the ZDF series "Spring". Alongside his screen work, Mössmer worked with the ORF as a voice actor in numerous radio plays.
