Restoring Faith in 'Restaurant of the Heart': A Helping Hand is Needed in Erfurt
After a much-needed break of three years, 'Restaurant des Herzens', situated in Erfurt, is back to serve those in need. Following takeaway offers throughout the coronavirus pandemic and construction-induced halt, the eatery is once again welcoming volunteers with open arms. The enthusiasm for donations has been robust, highlighted Petra Hegt, the Managing Director of the Evangelical City Mission, ahead of their reopening on Wednesday. However, what's truly required is an increase in volunteers. The number of volunteers has dwindled substantially this year, with some having reached retirement age or simply deciding to step down from the often physically demanding tasks.
Funded by Generosity and Goodwill
Petra Hegt believes that an estimated 100,000 euros will be necessary to keep the service functional for the upcoming year. These funds will cover additional food expenses and electricity bills that have remained steady. In addition to monetary contributions, private donors, firms, and associations contribute food, goods, and special gifts for the children who frequent the restaurant.
Symbolic Entry Fee, Heartwarming Atmosphere
For just a symbolic euro, individuals residing in dire circumstances can enjoy a warm meal, a cup of coffee, and some delectable pastries at the 'Restaurant des Herzens'. The restaurant also provides an entertaining program to make the meal experience more enjoyable. The number of visitors fluctuates, with some days witnessing up to 150 guests and others catering to a modest 60. The occupancy rate depends on factors including the menu, weather, and pension payments. Last year, many Ukrainian women with children graciously made use of the service.
Measuring the Demand for Assistance
While determining the exact number of individuals in need of assistance in Thuringia is challenging, the Regional Directorate of the Federal Employment Agency estimates that approximately 119,000 people received citizen's allowance in August 2023. This figure comprises 31,000 non-employable beneficiaries and 88,000 individuals requiring aid but able to work or struggling to earn enough. Approximately 2.1 million people reside in Thuringia.
