Friedrich Merz's visit to Poland on this Wednesday held the promise of strengthening German-Polish relations and highlighting Poland as an exceptional neighbor. However, his encounter with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in the evening took a turbulent turn due to Germany's fresh asylum policy.

Just before Merz's arrival in Warsaw, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt delivered the news: a shift in approach—stronger border patrols, increased deportations, even those claiming asylum. Tusk underscored his disapproval towards the new German government's plan, stating, "Migration is a European issue, not a national one," addressing Merz. "I expect full cooperation from the new German government to protect our common borders." No nation should dictate migrant group redistribution to Poland, Tusk asserted emphatically, with Poland refusing to bow down.

The Controversy Unfolds: Tusk Rebukes Merz on Border Controls

Tusk expressed his concerns about border enforcement, labeling it as potentially problematic. "Any endeavor in this direction will lead to significant issues," Tusk stated, referring to cross-border commuters working in Germany and vice versa. "I don't want to jeopardize the atmosphere," Tusk noted, but Poland has made its position crystal clear: "The worst outcome would be an abrupt imposition of border controls." There must be European resolutions, Tusk added.

It's worth noting that Poland is currently engulfed in a high-stakes presidential election campaign, and this setting suits Tusk well as he portrays an assertive prime minister. Nevertheless, Tusk's firm tone is noteworthy and unlikely to sit well with Merz. During his initial trip, Merz is made aware that asylum policy is more complex than he had initially envisioned.

"In collaboration with our European neighbors," the coalition has agreed to enact the new asylum policy. However, neighboring countries voice unenthusiastic support for Merz's plans. Merz claims he communicated with Tusk prior to his Chancellorship about swift policy implementation. Despite this, it appears that such early concessions have done little to quell relationships with nearby countries.

"We aim to further shape EU migration policy together," Merz asserts, making it clear that border controls will be enacted in a way that satisfies the neighbors. Merz spoke with Interior Minister Dobrindt during his travel to Tusk and requested coordination with the European neighbors. He emphasized that illegal migration is a pan-European issue that requires joint attention rather than being tackled by a single country. Already, Merz appears ready to leash his minister's actions, hoping to avoid straining relations.

In essence, Merz's inaugural outing fares poorly in terms of asylum policy. Previously in Paris, he received minor enthusiasm for his migration policy proposal. French President Emmanuel Macron refrained from open criticism but expressed concern about preserving the integrity of the Schengen system.
