Trump International Golf Links in Scotland: A Prestigious Golfing Destination

Trump International Golf Links, located in Menie (Balmedie), Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is a golf resort that has been a topic of interest since its purchase by Donald Trump in 2006. The resort, which was initially planned as a £1 billion development, includes two 18-hole golf courses, a 5-star hotel, villas, holiday homes, and a golf academy[1].

The original course, known as the "Old Course," was launched in 2012, despite facing environmental opposition due to its impact on sand dunes designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This controversy led to the partial destruction of the sand dunes, resulting in the revocation of the SSSI status in 2020[1].

However, the resort's latest addition, the "New Course," opened in July 2025, has been met with excitement. Spanning 7,589 yards, the New Course is designed as a modern links course, intended to complement and elevate the original, and is marketed collectively as "The Greatest 36 Holes in Golf"[2][3].

The New Course's official opening was attended by Donald Trump, his son Eric Trump, 2014 Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, and 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem, who also played a significant role in its design[2][3]. The course hosted a PGA Seniors Championship event shortly after its opening in late July 2025 and began offering rounds to the public starting August 13, 2025[4].

The Staysure PGA Seniors Championship, which will take place later this week, is set to be the next major event at Trump International Golf Links. Colin Montgomerie, a European icon and proud Scotsman, will host the tournament. Several golfing legends, including Jose Maria Olazabal, Rich Beem, Paul McGinley, David Howell, Paul Lawrie, Jean Van De Velde, and Michael Campbell, are among those set to play[6].

The DP World Tour will also return to Trump International Golf Links with the Nexo Championship in 2025. This $2.75 million event last featured in the Race To Dubai in 2020[7]. The tournament's return marks an important milestone for Trump International, Scotland, as they celebrate the grand opening of their new championship links course in 2025[8].

Despite the controversy surrounding its environmental impact and the lack of plans to host The Open Championship at Trump International Golf Links in the foreseeable future, the resort continues to establish itself as a major golfing destination[5]. DP World Tour CEO, Guy Kinnings, has stated that Trump International Golf Links Scotland is an excellent venue for the return of the Scottish Championship[9].

The resort's history, prestigious events, and ongoing development make it a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts worldwide.
