Trump-Putin Meeting in Alaska: A Symbolic Dialogue Without Breakthrough

The much-anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin is set to take place in Alaska, marking their first encounter in over four years. The focus of the talks is the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, but the likelihood of a ceasefire or major breakthrough remains uncertain.

Since the beginning of his second term in January 2025, Trump has positioned himself as a mediator for a peaceful solution, distancing himself from Biden's supportive stance towards Ukraine. However, Ukraine is conspicuously absent from the negotiations, a move that has raised concerns about the legitimacy and durability of any potential settlement.

Putin, who last visited the United States in September 2015, has shown no willingness to concede on the core issue—ending the war. The U.S. side, led by Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has sought peace, but their efforts have so far failed to secure commitments.

The continuation of the war is becoming increasingly expensive for Russia, with high salaries attracting volunteers and causing a labor shortage. Meanwhile, the Russian economy is under pressure from Western sanctions, leading to a potential recession and rapidly dwindling reserves.

Moscow has demanded that Ukraine give up its NATO aspirations and cede territories it annexed in 2014 for a peaceful resolution. Millions of Ukrainians have fled their homes due to the conflict, with Russia currently holding the initiative and expanding its gains.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not be at the meeting, and he has rejected any compromise on Crimea or the regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Saporischschja, and Kherson. Trump has hinted at a possible land swap between Ukraine and Russia, but details are vague.

Despite the lack of progress, there is a possibility of further meetings, potentially in Moscow, but without concrete plans or commitments. Independent Russian political scientist Tatjana Stanovaja sees potential in the summit as a possible end to the war, but is skeptical about the implementation of agreements.

Trump's ten-day deadline for a ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv has now expired without further action. However, Russia is interested in discussing strategic security, particularly nuclear arms control, with Trump. The location of the meeting in Alaska, the northernmost state of the USA, is due to its proximity to Russia, convenience for Putin, and security benefits for the Kremlin leader.

The meeting in Alaska is a symbolic dialogue without a breakthrough, with the critical absence of Ukraine from discussions. Future progress likely depends on including Ukraine directly and Russia’s willingness to halt aggression.
