In the heart of Tribeca, Donald Moffett's latest exhibition, "Snowflake," is currently on display at Alexander Gray Associates gallery. This thought-provoking show features a collection of paintings that seem to represent snow sliding off a surface, such as Lot 052525 (nature cult, melt 1) and Lot 061625 (nature cult, melt A).

The paintings in the exhibition are generally in shades of black and white, with a few works done in an icy blue. Moffett's current exhibition includes three bumper stickers as part of an ongoing series. The bumper stickers read: "SCIENCE"; "KILL NOTHING"; and "LAUGH. RIOT."

Moffett, who was involved with the ACT UP-affiliated artist collective Gran Fury during the AIDS crisis, has shown a deep commitment to activism throughout his career. His work was labeled "homo art" during this time.

One of the standout pieces in the exhibition is Aluminum/White Home Unmoored (2004), which features a video of the White Home at night projected onto a metallic silver canvas. The video is grainy and ominous, making the White Home feel menacing and sinister.

Moffett's work in the 2019 show at Marianne Boesky in Chelsea featured deep reds, blues, and greens, which is markedly different from the current exhibition's monochromatic palette.

The title "Snowflake" is a deliberate provocation for Moffett, who sees a connection between the term and the current climate crisis. Moffett stated that he could be "charged" as a snowflake and would gladly wear it as a negative nomenclature.

This is Moffett's first exhibition with Alexander Gray Associates gallery. He decided to join the gallery in part because of his long friendship with the gallery's founder and the gallery's program. Moffett has shown Aluminum/White Home Unmoored at apropos moments over the years, and this is just one more such occasion.

Moffett began experimenting with manipulating his paint as though it were icing during the '90s, after the activism of Gran Fury and ACT UP began to wind down. He refers to these built-up works as "extruded paintings," which have their roots in the years following the AIDS crisis.

Moffett sees artists as playing a role and being challenged during current times. He first began showing bumper stickers as artworks in his 2022 exhibition at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas. Since 2021, Donald Moffett has been represented by the gallery Sperone Westwater.

In conclusion, Donald Moffett's "Snowflake" exhibition at Alexander Gray Associates gallery is a powerful exploration of the climate crisis, activism, and the role of art in contemporary society. The exhibition runs until 24th April 2023.
